SKINCARE FOR MEN LOSING WEIGHT: A NO-NONSENSE ROUTINE
By Marc McKee, Founder of ElastiK° Skin
TL;DR: THE ESSENTIAL POINTS
- Men's skin is different, but it still changes when you lose weight. On average it is thicker and oilier than women's, and it loses water faster.3
- Losing weight changes the face. Rapid fat loss reduces facial volume, which can leave skin looking looser.7
- Shaving gets harder on looser skin. The neck is where men most often report soreness and irritation from shaving.4
- A good routine takes about five minutes. Hydrate after the shower, protect in the day with SPF 30 or higher, and use a richer cream at night.5,6
- No product removes loose skin. Skincare supports how skin looks and feels. Significant excess skin is a surgical question.
Most men I talk to have never had a skincare routine. I did not either.
Shower gel, maybe a moisturiser someone bought me, and that was it. Then I lost about nine stone on a GLP-1 journey, and my skin changed in ways I had no idea how to deal with. I talk to men every day who are in the same position and have no idea where to start.
November is Movember, when men grow moustaches to raise money and start conversations about men's health.1,2 It is a good moment to talk about something a lot of men losing weight are dealing with quietly: what is happening to their skin.
This is not about vanity.
It is about feeling comfortable in a body that has changed fast, and not being caught off guard by it. If a few minutes a day helps with that, it is worth doing.
This article covers how men's skin differs, what weight loss does to a man's face and neck, how to shave skin that has got looser, and a simple routine that does not need a bathroom full of products.
01. ABOUT MOVEMBER
Movember describes itself as a global men's health movement that started with a few friends growing moustaches to get men talking about their health.1 It is best known for its moustache-growing campaign every November.2
The charity focuses on three areas: mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer.1 It says the moustaches have funded more than AUD $1.8 billion of prevention-focused work.1
Skin is not one of its causes. But the idea behind it, that men should pay attention to their bodies and talk about what is going on, applies here too. If losing weight has left you feeling self-conscious, you are far from the only one.
02. HOW MEN'S SKIN IS DIFFERENT
A review of 57 studies comparing male and female skin found that men's skin generally has higher hydration, more oil (sebum), more blood flow, more pigment and greater thickness. It also loses more water through the surface.3
That last point surprises people. Thicker, oilier skin is not the same as well-moisturised skin. Men can, and do, get dry, tight, flaky skin, especially on the cheeks and neck after shaving.
| Feature | What it generally means for men | What it means for your routine |
|---|---|---|
| Thicker skin | Generally greater thickness than women's skin3 | Does not make you immune to looseness after big weight loss |
| More sebum | More oil, often on the nose and forehead3 | Choose lightweight gels and serums for the face |
| Higher water loss | Skin loses more water through its surface3 | Hydration still matters, especially after shaving |
| Shaving | Regular irritation, mostly on the neck4 | Prep the skin, and moisturise afterwards |
03. WHAT WEIGHT LOSS DOES TO A MAN'S FACE AND NECK
A 2025 review of the skin effects of GLP-1 medicines describes significant facial volume loss when rapid fat reduction depletes the fat under the skin, with collagen and elasticity changes thought to play a part. It is also clear that the term "Ozempic face" is not a medical diagnosis and the exact mechanism is not settled.7
Many men notice it first along the jawline, under the chin and on the neck. I cover the face in more detail in Mounjaro Face in Men: What's Different and What to Do About It.
I have stretch marks, and I am realistic that I may still need surgery one day. Looking after my skin has not changed that. It has changed how it looks and feels in the meantime.
WHAT SKINCARE CAN AND CANNOT DO
I am going to be blunt, because this category is full of overpromising. No cream lifts a jawline or removes excess skin. What a good routine can do is keep the skin hydrated, comfortable and smoother-looking, and help it cope better with shaving. Significant excess skin is a conversation with your GP or a surgeon.
04. SHAVING SKIN THAT HAS GOT LOOSER
Research funded by a razor maker found that men most often report soreness and irritation on the neck, with redness, nicks, burning, tightness, dryness and itching among the signs. The number of nicks on the neck was linked to how much redness men reported.4 Softer, less taut skin is easier to catch with a blade, so technique matters more.
The same research found that preparing the skin before shaving, with a scrub or a brush and shaving cream, released trapped hairs better than water alone.4
WHAT I HAVE LEARNED
- Shave after a warm shower, not before. Softer hair, softer skin.
- Prep with a shaving cream or gel, ideally worked in with a brush, not just water.4
- Stretch the skin gently with your free hand on the neck and under the jaw, so the blade glides over a flat surface.
- Go with the grain on the neck. Fewer passes, less pressure.
- Change the blade before it starts to drag.
- Moisturise straight after. Freshly shaved skin is the driest it will be all day.
If you are growing a Mo this month.
You are still shaving everything around it. The same rules apply, and the skin under a new moustache can get itchy and dry too. A light, non-greasy moisturiser helps.
05. THE NO-NONSENSE ROUTINE
This is the routine I would give any man starting out. Three essentials, then add the rest when you are ready.
THE ESSENTIALS
- Hydrate after the shower. Hyaluronic acid is a humectant that draws water into the skin. In a randomised trial around the eyes, hyaluronic acid creams improved hydration and elasticity compared with a plain cream.5
- Protect in the day. The NHS recommends sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and at least 4-star UVA protection, and notes you can burn in the UK even when it is cloudy.6 Shaved skin and a thinning hairline both catch the sun.
- Comfort at night. A richer cream before bed, on the face and neck.
HYDRATION CONTINUUM GEL
Hyaluronic acid with sodium PCA and aloe. A light gel for the face, neck, chest and arms, straight after the shower and after shaving.
Men's skin tends to be oilier, but it also loses more water through its surface.3 A light gel hydrates without leaving skin shiny, and it is a good first thing on freshly shaved skin.
COLLAGEN ARCHITECT SERUM
Multi-weight hyaluronic acid and sodium PCA to support the look of firmer, more hydrated skin. Jawline, neck and chest, and the stomach if that is where you have lost most.
Many men notice change first along the jawline, under the chin and on the neck. This is a light morning serum for exactly those areas, and it goes on in seconds before you get dressed.
REGENESIS COMPLEX
A peptide serum with hexapeptide-11 and dipalmitoyl hydroxyproline. A small amount, anywhere you have lost weight: neck, chest, arms, stomach, thighs.
If you have lost weight from your stomach, chest or arms, a face-only routine misses the areas that have changed most. A small amount of one product covers them.
EVOLVE SERUM
Bakuchiol with rosehip, evening primrose and jojoba oils, straight after Regenesis Complex, on areas with stretch marks or uneven texture.
Plenty of men have stretch marks after losing weight. I do. Evolve will not remove them, but it is a nourishing oil that keeps the skin on those areas soft and comfortable.
RESILIENCE MATRIX NIGHT CREAM
Shea and cocoa butter with plant glycosphingolipids. Face, neck and chest as you get into bed.
The neck is where shaving irritation is most common.4 A richer cream at night gives that skin time to feel comfortable again before the next shave.
WHEN YOU ARE READY FOR MORE
ELASTIK° SKIN LED FACE + NECK MASK
234 LEDs across the face and neck. Use it on clean, dry skin before your evening routine, starting at 5 minutes and building to 10. UK delivery only.
It covers the jawline and neck, where many men notice change first, and it needs no product applying. The evidence for LED is promising but limited, and no study has been done on our mask, so add it once the basics are a habit.
PEPTIDE SOLSTICE DAY CREAM
A lightweight peptide moisturiser for the face and neck, with hexapeptide-11, dipalmitoyl hydroxyproline and hyaluronic acid.
It sits comfortably under sunscreen, and SPF 30 or higher matters for shaved skin and a thinning hairline.6 One light layer in the morning, then your SPF.
In our pre-launch trial of the topical routine, all 11 participants said their skin felt more hydrated after six weeks, and 9 of 11 said it felt more comfortable (see the evidence).

06. FAQ
DO MEN NEED A DIFFERENT SKINCARE ROUTINE?
Not completely different. Men's skin tends to be thicker and oilier, but it also loses more water.3 Lighter textures and good post-shave care are the main adjustments.
HOW DO I STOP RAZOR IRRITATION ON MY NECK?
Prepare the skin with a shaving gel or cream, shave after a shower, keep the skin taut, go with the grain and moisturise afterwards. The neck is the most common problem area.4
CAN SKINCARE TIGHTEN A LOOSE JAWLINE AFTER WEIGHT LOSS?
No. It can support the look of smoother, firmer-looking skin, but it cannot remove excess skin or lift the jaw.
WHAT IS THE SIMPLEST ROUTINE FOR A MAN ON MOUNJARO OR WEGOVY?
Hydrate after the shower, SPF 30 or higher in the day, a richer cream at night. Add body care for the stomach and chest once that becomes a habit.6
DO MEN NEED SUNSCREEN IN THE UK?
Yes. The NHS says you can burn in the UK even on cloudy days, and the sun is strongest from 11am to 3pm, March to October.6
IS MOVEMBER ABOUT SKIN?
No. Its causes are mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer.1 It is about men paying attention to their health, which is a good habit full stop.
